Residential building in Glyfada
Residential - Glyfada, Greece
Private commission, 2021-2022
Our client assigned us to design a family residential building in a typical 600 sqm longitudinal lot in Glyfada, a seaside suburb of Athens. We focused on delivering a design that will spark the imagination of the future inhabitants rather than fit into the current super-simple all-white design trend that monopolizes the area. We created a solid 4-level, 990sqm structure with a green cement exterior finish. In lieu of the common sterilised longitudinal glass-balustrade balconies, we designed cozy outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces that appear as the extension of the interior space. Additionally, we built planters into all the balconies to enhance privacy, encourage residents to take over the building’s facades, and treat the organism as a vertical garden – an unplanned phenomenon that can evolve and grow during the lifetime of the building. We decided to crown the structure with a pitched roof, an uncommon feature for a Greek residential building - however an opportunity for double-height spaces at the penthouse apartment. The plot faces north and our client was concerned with bringing natural light and ventilation into the living areas. We decided to design a big atrium in the heart of the building that opens towards the south-east and brings light into all living spaces. The building stands over an open-space pilotis with a common pool surrounded with lush vegetation: a secret, private oasis for the residents. In conclusion, we wanted to create a whole new cosmos for the residents of this unique building; an ecosystem where both design and strategy will equally depart from and improve the surrounding area.
