The building for the municipal student residences is conceived as a clear architectural duality between a grounded, materially assertive base and a lighter, more articulated upper volume, each responding to distinct programmatic and spatial demands. This layered composition establishes both hierarchy and legibility within the urban context, while allowing the building to operate simultaneously as infrastructure and inhabited structure.
The ground floor is defined by a strong tectonic language expressed through cross-shaped structural columns cast in red concrete with exposed aggregates. This robust structural system gives the base a sense of permanence and civic weight. Large perimeter openings are carefully calibrated and framed either by deep burgundy metal window systems with glazing or, where servicing and back-of-house functions occur, by metal infill panels and integrated louvers within the same chromatic family. The continuity of red and burgundy tones establishes a clear horizontal datum, visually anchoring the building and differentiating it from the upper levels, while contributing to a recognisable identity within a heterogeneous urban fabric.
These generous openings are not purely compositional; they actively mediate between interior and exterior conditions. By dissolving the threshold at street level, the base becomes more than a plinth - it operates as an extension of public space, reinforcing visual permeability and encouraging a more engaged relationship between the building’s interior life and its surrounding neighbourhood. This condition fosters openness and accessibility, particularly for students and local residents, embedding the building within everyday urban flows.
In contrast, the upper volume is conceived as a lighter, more controlled architectural field. Its façades are structured by a disciplined green metal grid that defines rhythm and proportion while framing a sequence of balconies. Within this structural armature, white fabric shading panels introduce a soft, dynamic layer that responds to light and movement, modulating the building’s appearance throughout the day. The vertical rotation of these elements introduces a subtle kinetic quality, enhancing environmental performance while adding depth to the façade composition.
The narrower elevations adopt a more restrained formal expression, allowing for variation in perception as the building is experienced from different directions along the street. This calibrated differentiation enriches the spatial reading of the project in motion, reinforcing its presence without resorting to uniformity.
Together, these layered systems articulate a precise architectural hierarchy - where structure, material, and climate-responsive elements operate in concert. The result is a building that is both grounded and elevated, robust and refined, offering a distinctive contemporary presence that engages confidently with its urban surroundings.
